Insulating old buildings with breathable systems

Wednesday, 15 February 2012 - 6:30pm - 8:00pm
Maidenhead Golf Club

Traditionally constructed buildings used materials such as stone, brick or cob in conjunction with permeable lime mortars and renders to keep out the weather.  Lime mortars work through their ability to absorb and release moisture - "to breathe" - and accept structural movement.  The introduction of cement in the restoration of such buildings is the primary cause of damp and other problems.

In this talk, Phil Bown of the Cornish Lime Company provides an introduction to lime - pushed aside in the post World War II building boom - explaining the reasons for using lime mortars and the methods for their successful application.

The talk goes on to examine the use of thermal boards with natural lime render as  external cladding for improving insulation whilst maintaining breathability.

Tea/coffee will be served from 6.00pm, giving an opportunity for networking prior to the talk.

Cost:  FREE to 3CPD members and students; £20.00 (inc. VAT) for non-members.
